The 4 mistakes that kill the shine on chrome

1 min read

Keeping chrome and metal trim with that "mirror effect" takes more than a quick clean. Often, while trying to look after the car, we end up making mistakes that speed up wear and oxidation of the metal.

Here are the 4 main mistakes and how to avoid them:

  • Polishing without cleaning properly first: Particles such as dust and sand act as abrasives, sanding the surface, creating micro-scratches, taking away the mirror effect and reducing the metal's protection.
  • Using abrasive materials: The most common mistake is using stiff sponges or rough cloths. They create micro-scratches that scatter light instead of reflecting it, leaving a dull look and making deep oxidation easier.

  • Using extreme-pH chemicals: Overly acidic or alkaline degreasers can react with the chrome layer, causing whitish marks or yellowing of the metal and spoiling the mirror finish.

  • No protection after cleaning: Removing surface dirt is only half the job. Without applying a dedicated polish that seals the pores of the metal, the surface is left exposed to contaminants that cause corrosion pitting.

Always use dedicated products, such as our Redex Chrome & Metal Polish, to keep your car's show-car shine for much longer.
