The best products for washing your car at home (2026)
We are the factory. We formulate and fill the Redex Detail Series in Sintra, Portugal, so it's fair to ask: why would we recommend anything else? The answer is simple. We show the price, the ml and the cost per litre of each product, and we tell you when one of them isn't right for you. If you don't need the whole kit, we'll say that too.
This list follows the real order of a wash at home: wheels first, then the bodywork, then drying, then the finish. Prices were checked on the official website in July 2026, one by one, straight from the catalogue. If you come back to this page in a few months, check the price on the product card before deciding. We've seen numbers change from one week to the next ourselves.
1. Before washing: the wheels
Redex Wheel Cleaner 500 ml Detail (€7.99, €15.98/L)
Spray it on cool wheels, before touching the rest of the car. The formula changes colour where it reacts with brake dust, so you can see the product working instead of guessing how long to wait. Then it's just a pressure washer or a hose. It's the step most people skip when washing at home, and it's also where the toughest dirt sits once it has dried.
An honest limit: if you don't drive much or have an electric car, your wheels may not build up any visible brake dust at all. In that case, the shampoo from step 2 is enough to clean them, and this product just sits in the cupboard.
2. Washing the bodywork
Redex Snow Foam Shampoo 1 L Detail (€5.99, €5.99/L)
It comes out of the bottle bright pink; as foam it turns white and dense and covers the whole car before you touch it with a cloth. It works in a foam cannon or by hand in a bucket, with the same formula either way. It contains wax, so the bodywork dries glossy rather than dull. One litre covers several washes of an average car, depending on how much foam you use each time.
It's a shampoo for bodywork and exterior glass. For wheels, tyres and the interior there are dedicated products in this list. Using it on those alone leaves the job incomplete, because it wasn't designed for brake dust or tyre rubber.
Redex Wash Mitt Noodle 2-in-1 (€5.99)
It has two sides: "noodle" microfibre that traps loose dirt and a smooth side for more stubborn marks. It isn't a chemical. It's the tool that applies the shampoo without dragging dirt across the paint, which reduces the risk of fine scratches during the wash.
If you wash the car once a month and don't mind the risk of fine scratches, an ordinary sponge and a bucket will do. The mitt pays off when you wash regularly and want to reduce that risk over time, not in a single wash.
3. Drying
Redex Ultra Absorbent Drying Towel (from €2.45 in the 30x40 cm size, €4.50 in 50x70 cm, or €12.00 for a box of 6)
Microfibre for drying, without the risk of fine scratches from an ordinary bath towel. The 50x70 cm size dries an average car without switching towels halfway, and the box of 6 is worth it if you dry more than one car at home or your towel always seems to need washing.
An honest limit: if you already have a dedicated microfibre car towel that doesn't leave marks or smell musty, you don't need to switch just because it's ours. Buy when the one you have starts to scratch, not before.
4. The finish: tyres, paintwork and glass
Redex Tyre Shine 500 ml Detail (€7.99, €15.98/L)
It's applied to a tyre that's already washed and dry. A thin coat with an applicator or cloth is enough for all four tyres, and it's touch-dry in a few minutes without the greasy film most tyre gels leave on the sidewall. That film is what usually runs onto the wheel at the first rain, and it's why many people give up on this type of product.
It doesn't restore worn or cracked tyres. It brings back the even black and shine of a clean tyre, not new rubber, and it doesn't replace changing a tyre at the end of its life.
Redex Detailer Exterior Ceramic 500 ml (€7.99, €15.98/L)
A spray with SiO₂ siloxanes that you apply in five minutes after washing. Spray, spread with a microfibre cloth, go over it with a clean one, and water beads off at the first rain. Reapply when you notice it has stopped doing that, which usually happens after a few weeks of normal use, depending on how often it rains and how often you wash the car in between.
It needs no curing and no machine, unlike a professional multi-year ceramic coating applied in a studio. It works as a sealant between washes, to keep the shine a little longer. Not for use on wheels, the interior or matte vinyl.
Redex Glass Cleaner Concentrate 2 L Detail Series (€5.99; the 2 L dilutes in equal parts to make up to 5 L of ready-to-use solution, about €1.20/L diluted)
Concentrated: it's diluted in equal parts with water, and the 2 L makes up to 5 L, enough to fill the screenwash reservoir of most cars for months. It works on exterior and interior glass, and it's the product on this list with the lowest cost per litre once diluted.
If you just want a ready-to-use spray with nothing to dilute, this isn't the right format for you. It's made for people who wash regularly and don't want to keep buying 500 ml bottles every week.
Redex Detailer Interior 500 ml (€7.99, €15.98/L)
For plastics and interior surfaces, with a matte finish instead of the "wet" shine some products leave on the dashboard. Apply it after dusting with a dry cloth, not before, otherwise the product clings to the dust instead of replacing it with a finish.
It isn't suitable for leather or fabric upholstery. If you have leather seats, you need a dedicated leather product, which we don't sell in this range.
When you don't need to buy any of this
If you wash the car once a month, in a flat, with no garage and no lacquer curing in sight, the essentials are shampoo, a mitt and a microfibre towel. That already covers 80% of what most people are looking for. The detailers, tyre shine and dedicated wheel cleaner come in when you want the extra finish, not as an obligation.
And if your wheels never show built-up black dust, skip the Wheel Cleaner: the shampoo from step 2, with a little more contact time, usually does the job.

Prices checked in July 2026 in the official plurifil.pt catalogue. The 6 liquid products on this list, shampoo, wheel cleaner, tyre shine, exterior ceramic detailer, interior detailer and concentrated glass cleaner, add up to €43.94 bought separately. Bought together in the Redex Detail Series kit they come to €39.55, with a drying towel included as a free gift, a saving of €4.39. The wash mitt isn't part of that kit and is sold separately.
This kit price changes when the site runs a different promotion from usual, so always check the price on the bundle card before deciding, not on this page. It's the same rule we apply to ourselves when writing this article: never fix a price in the text without checking it at the time.
Frequently asked questions
Is Redex wheel cleaner any good?
Yes. The Detail Series Wheel Cleaner changes colour where it reacts with brake dust, so you can see the cleaning happen instead of waiting in the dark. If you don't drive much and your wheels have no visible black dust, you don't need a dedicated product: regular shampoo will clean them.
Is this the same Redex sold in supermarkets?
It's the same brand, formulated and filled at the same factory in Sintra, but it's a different range from the one sold in Portuguese supermarkets for 2 or 3 euros. The Detail Series has a different formula and a different specification; use the right products for what you need, not the ones you recognise first on the shelf.
Do I need the whole kit or can I just buy the shampoo?
You can buy just the shampoo. If you wash the car once a month, shampoo, a mitt and a towel are enough. The kit is worth it when you already use, or will use, most of the 6 products, because it works out cheaper than buying them separately.
Does the ceramic detailer replace wax?
It isn't a carnauba wax, it's an SiO₂ sealant that you apply in five minutes, with no machine and no curing time. It does a similar job to a quick-application wax, but doesn't last as long as a professional ceramic coating applied in a studio.
Can I use washing-up liquid instead of these products?
We don't recommend it. Washing-up liquid is made to cut grease on dishes, not to preserve wax or sealant on paintwork; it tends to dry the surface out with repeated use. A proper car shampoo costs a few euros and avoids that wear.
How far does the concentrated glass cleaner go?
The 2 L is diluted in equal parts with water and makes up to 5 L of ready-to-use solution, which usually fills the screenwash reservoir several times over a number of months, depending on the car.
Do these products scratch the paint?
None of these products, on their own, scratch the paint. Fine scratches almost always come from technique or accessories: a dry sponge, a dirty cloth reused without rinsing. Use the mitt with diluted shampoo and change cloths when one is visibly dirty.
How long does a full wash take with these products?
For an average car, between 40 and 60 minutes, including drying time, if you follow the order of this list. The ceramic detailer and tyre shine add about 10 minutes at the end, but aren't needed every wash.
